Since I can't sit and visit with all of you face to face I have compiled some of my best thoughts and tools that I have created over the years for lesson planning, teacher training and communicating! This is a great resouce for homes or communities. Here is a glimpse at the table of contents:
Charlotte Mason in a Nutshell p. 3 - 4
One of my many attempts to say all of the things succinctly! This one is handy as it is on one sheet of paper (when printed front and back). Makes a nice resource for families, new teachers, and can be a good starting point for continuing conversation and study.
The Magic Key: The Charlotte Mason Lesson Arc p. 6 - 12
This is one of the most useful documents I have compiled. This is the content I have taught in teacher training sessions for years. A detailed conversation about each part of the lesson arc with lots of practical ideas and tips for applying the philosophy in real life. Charts and formatting make this visually approachable and many have said this was the key to their understanding of how to use living books.
Teacher/ Student Role Reminder Bookmarks p. 13
This handy bookmark reminds which duties are reserved for the teacher and which are reserved for the student. Distilled specifics from “School Education” in a quick reference format give ideas for lesson planning and in-the-moment teaching. Keep teachers within parameters, challenge students appropriately.
Language Arts Skill Progression p. 14
How can language arts be taught with living books? Like this! Color-coded charts show specific skills/ objectives for each grade and form. A practical and easy to use reference. Use it as a checklist for individual students or coordinate various teachers on specific skills as they work with different classes from various books. Provides guidance for grades 1- 8.
Copy Work to Commonplace p. 15
A detailed how-to for walking students from the very earliest stages of copy work with specific steps and suggestions. Details how and when to transition to keeping a commonplace book.
History Rotation Chart p. 16
Here is a chart and short conversation that shows how we rotate through the eras of history as a single stream in 6 years, and also how families who participate with our hybrid program overlay a second stream of history. This is a great asset for hybrid schools as it allows each stream to stay complete, cohesive, and vital in each sphere. This is also helpful for families who would like to do a two-stream approach to history. Book title recommendations are available with a consultation.
Red-Brick Academy’s Student Motto p. 17
This is a call and response we have created around Charlotte Mason’s student motto. This is the actual paper we have in our morning folders and use at the start of class each week (so it’s a little bit pretty!). The content of this document communicates so many truths and forms the bedrock for what we do personally and the expectations for community. A quick reference to a particular line from the student motto clarifies and resolves issues quickly.
Red-Brick Academy’s Student Contracts p. 18 - 20
Miss Mason says that students should be given opportunities to make acts of their will. At Red-Brick we partner with students. Here are the student contracts we ask students to read and sign at the start of each school year. This forms a basis for conversations throughout the year. 3 different contracts for various ages.
Red-Brick Academy’s Screen Use Agreement p. 21 - 32
This is adapted from Heritage School in Cambridge England. We are thankful to Jason Fletcher for his thoughts and leadership in this area. Here is how we modified what they do for our group. Take this, have a look at theirs, and make your own. This is a crucial component for creating the kind of culture conducive to a Charlotte Mason education.
Red-Brick Academy’s Grade Evaluation Tools p. 33 - 40
A short conversation about what, why and how we grade at Red-Brick. A form for tracking class participation and character, a rubric for evaluating narrations, and a form for communication with student/parents. Plus a sample high school exam and rubric.
Plus! - when you order I will gift you my gift packet from the 2023 Centary Conference in Ambleside England. This is a great resource that accompanies my presention "From Narration to Essay". This document has detailed lesson plans, handouts, charts, sample narrations to work with and more as I guide you through the process of guiding your student(s) to formal writing structures in 6 easy sessions!
(This document also includes, student motto, and student contracts!)
(I know I sound like a cheesy TV commerical! The truth is I have lost access to the word document and cannot copy and paste the PDF onto this document, which would make life a whole lot easier! #reallife #lowtech! Give me 48 hours to email this to you directly!)
